Derby Square is the heart of the downtown. Designed by John Collins in 1972, this imaginative plaza seamlessly blends modern design with historic charm. Click above to hear partner Tom Schraudenbach discuss it's creation.
It was the initial "test case" within the Heritage Plaza East Project Area; one meant to impress skeptical SRA members that good design would draw business into the city.
The design is pure collins: dramatic angles, gently rising steps, and striking concrete patterns. Derby Square is a masterpiece of urban design and the Collins Society is actively committed to designating this plaza a Historic Landmark for Landscape Architecture.

Condition/Goals
About
Since its completion in 1976, Derby Square has served Salem well. Unfortunately, the original lighting bollards that once gently illuminated the plaza have all been removed. The steps leading up to the Old Town Hall are slowly beginning to chip and the kiosk's awning has been cheapened with badly painted local scenes.
